I have to read them soon.<BR/><BR/>Based on your comments about an artist's duty to respond to politics, I think you would enjoy Pat Barker's _Life Class_, because the 3 central characters are all painters trying to decide what to do at the start of WWI. One character decides to ignore the war & live for her art, one sees painting the war as a ticket to fame, and the third has to go experience fighting before he knows how to feel/respond to it. It's a great book, fascinating history and very, very relevant to current events.<BR/><BR/>Along similar lines, David Downing's two 1930s mysteries (Zoo Station & Silesian Station) feature a British journalist in Berlin in the late 1930s, who just wants to stay in Berlin regardless of politics because his son is German and he just wants to be near him.
