I like your feelings and thoughts about Brooklyn. Different situations, from having grown up in Brooklyn, come up in my writing short stories, essays, and of course my thesis-memoir. We've never met, but I graduated January 2011 from the Wilkes MFA program. And I've heard your named mentioned several times. I'm enjoying my successes publishing short stories while I work diligently revising the memoir. I loved the interview.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, a very good book. I have read. In Hungary the title of the book is a bit different, but this does not last. It is rather thought-provoking to me. Our approach is to address that. Hungry for battle.

I just stumbled on your blog by accident (found your spot-on review of Jennifer Egan) and am so excited by this list and by your recommendations. I am off to read the review of the bolded books of 2010, and then probably buy them! Thanks for such a great summary list.

Sadly I don't have a system for books - I put a list on my blog, but it's pretty clumsy and a bit insufficient (I can't explain the ones which are 'just for fun/my brain is tired and that's why I'm reading this' exceptions!)

Wow, I am so bummed and stunned to hear this. Joe was the first indie bookseller I got to know when my book came out and he's still the person I picture when I think of the idea of an "independent bookseller." He was the first person who I heard use the term "hand selling" -- and after he described it to me I always wished he was in my local bookstore because he really knew which customers to recommend which books to. A major loss.

Years ago I was the Penguin rep for the Corner Bookstore, and Chris and Lenny were great fun to work with. I always enjoyed visiting that store for appointments and for author events.

I do agree that booksellers would benefit from working in stores other than their own. Even more I think editors would benefit from spending a day working in a store!

Actually, there is one character recurring from another's mitchell's novel.
It is ***Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler*** Boerhaave, Captain Molyneux's second on the "Prophetess", who -- we discover in the last part of Cloud -- pushed young boy Raphael to commit suicide after being repeatedly violated by Boerhaave and his "garter snakes". Yet in the Thousand Autumns, Boerhaave appear as a young, sincere, compasionate and devout man (he appear in the Thousand autumns around the year 1820, and In Cloud atlas, he appear around the year 1850).

I'm very, very glad I found this review because I don't live too far from Brooklyn and I am most definitely going to be there for David Mitchell's reading!

Great review of the new book. You perfectly captured the way so many people feel about Mitchell. Your post is what I would have written if I could express myself nearly as well as you do.

And the trepidation? Yeah, it's real, (and pardon the sports reference) but at the same time I think opening a David Mitchell book is like watching a prime Michael Jordan walk out onto a basketball court -- you know you are about to witness a masterful, unparalleled performance by an artist who is galactic turns ahead of his peers.

Fittingly, I discovered Ghostwritten completely by chance and picked it off a bookstore shelf in 1999 without knowing a damn thing about Mitchell or the book. He instantly became my favorite writer, and it's agonizing waiting for his new stuff.

Thanks so much for a great review, and I can't wait for your event in July. I'm the type of slow reader who likes to take a Kubrick-esque pace with novels and really soak everything in, so I hope there's enough time to finish the book before July 17. If not, well...I can't rush it. I'm psyched beyond belief that he's coming to New York -- and to think, he wrote his Bat Segundo chapter before he had ever set foot here.
